Stephen Harper stands by chief of staff who wrote Mike Duffy $90,000 cheque to cover housing expenses

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper is standing behind his right-hand man, saying chief of staff Nigel Wright will not resign over the fact he gave Sen. Mike Duffy $90,000 to cover the repayment of the Conservative senator’s housing expense claims.

Honesty and Mike Duffy appear to be total strangers.

From the start of the Senate housing controversy, which now shows signs of becoming something much bigger, the senator from P.E.I. has shown a basic inability to explain his actions in a manner the most credulous observer could swallow. In refusing to do so he has turned an unfortunate incident in a bona fide scandal and added unnecessarily to the growing list of woes facing a government that should be dealing with more serious issues.
